Telecommuting :: essays research papers fc

TelecommutingTelecommuting is a very interesting and labyrinthine subject. The pros and consof this concept are numerous and both sides become excellent arguments. In theresearch Ive done I feel I have to argue both sides to maintain a sense ofperspective. I had flux feelings about telecommuting before I started thisresearch and I find that this is something many others have in common with me.The reasons for and against telecommuting can be complex or simpledepending on which view point you take. From a managers view pointtelecommuting is a very dangerous undertaking that requires a highschool readinesslevel on the employees part. Allowing an employee with a low (R1, or R2)readiness level to telecommute is not likely to result in a positive manner. When an employee has a high readiness level and a definite desire to attemptworking in the home, for some reason or another, many factors should beconsidered. What frame of schedule does the employee feel constitutestelecommuting? Gen erally speaking, telecommuting is defined as spending atleast one day out of a 5 day work week working in the home. Is one day homeenough for the employee? Or, too little? How does the employer decide how manydays to throw in the towel? Does the employees job lend itself well to telecommuting? Somejobs, obviously, cant be accomplished using a telecommuting format. Does theemployee have a good track set down for working unsupervised? This relates backto readiness levels. An employee who isnt performing at a high readiness levelshould not even be considered as a candidate for telecommuting. All of thesequestions and many more must be answered on a case by case basis. This particular venture into creative schedule has its ups and downs aswell from an employees point of view. It can be quite a bed of roses for bothemployee and employer. A lot of nice smells and pretty sights, but live outfor the thorns. In several studies I reviewed I noticed that the telecommutingpopulation loses m any of the basics of the social contacts associated with theoffice environment. Judging the correct come of time that an employee shouldspend working at home in relation to working at the office can have asignificant stupor on both performance and satisfaction. Its usually hard forsomeone to completely cut themselves off from their work environment and stillperform well. The sense of cosmos out of touch with the others in the work forcecan be mitigated by the use of e-mail, teleconferencing, and the ever faithfultelephone.
